The Common Room was born from a simple but powerful idea: to help adults on the autism spectrum combat the social isolation that so many neurodiverse people face in adulthood. We dreamed of a place rooted in acceptance and understanding—a relaxed, social space where members could just be themselves, connect with others, hang out, and enjoy the richness of community.
Over the past 25 years, we've been actively involved with Aspire, a program at Massachusetts General Hospital that helps individuals on the autism spectrum build confidence, independence, and social skills. We've learned so much from the people, families, and professionals we've met—lessons that have shaped how we think about support, respect, and belonging.
Before founding The Common Room, David spent much of his career in the business world, including serving as CEO of Liberty Mutual for 11 years. But for both of us, this kind of work—supporting a community we care deeply about—has always been what matters most.
David’s latest project, Chittara Pasteria, is a pasta company dedicated to providing meaningful employment opportunities for neurodivergent individuals. Like The Common Room, it reflects our belief that everyone deserves dignity, purpose, and connection.
What we saw missing was a space that wasn’t a program or a form of therapy—but simply a warm, welcoming place to hang out, relax, and build friendships. That’s what The Common Room is all about: fostering community, sparking connection, and creating a more full and joyful life for everyone who walks through our doors.
Whether you’re a member, a family, a volunteer, or a supporter—thank you for being part of this. We’re so excited for what’s ahead.
Warmly,
David and Stephanie Long
Co-Founders, The Common Room
Many young adults find themselves socially isolated without the familiar structure they once relied on in their youth. That's why The Common Room was founded — to empower individuals who've faced these very challenges— to create a supportive, inclusive, and judgment-free space where everyone can truly be themselves. Here, we believe in celebrating strengths, passions, and interests.
Our community is buzzing with diverse activities designed around what our members love most. We provide abundant opportunities to connect with peers through shared hobbies, cultural events, and recreational adventures. Whether you're into culinary art, visual art, games, technology, music, or exploring new interests, you'll find your place here among friends who genuinely understand and appreciate you.
The Common Room empowers our members to build meaningful connections with others and explore the world with confidence. It's a comfortable, safe haven where members can relax, have fun, and expand their horizons in an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity.
